Physiotherapy helps Magne reach her 350m walking goal
We all love our morning coffee and for TPC client Magne, the idea of being able to walk to her local café was a goal that gave her focus and inspiration.
At first that target seemed on the limit of what Magne believed was achievable; in fact, she suggested it only when her physiotherapist asked her to suggest an ‘outrageous’ goal.
Her precise target was to walk 350m to the local café (with one person accompanying her), using her walker and stopping for a break.
Magne’s family often took her out to a local café so she decided being able to walk there would be a worthwhile achievement.
Steady progress
Goal-setting for seniors helps you keep stretching and striving to therefore maintain steady progress.
When Magne started her sessions with The Physio Co in April, 2019, she was struggling to stand up using a lifter due to the osteoarthritis in her knees.
She was at risk of being put on a full body lifter, which meant she would be unable to continue using her legs.
So the first goal was to improve Magne’s ability to stand and let her knees bear weight. Once she could spend longer on her feet, the next challenge was to take small steps forwards.
By sticking to her program, Magne started to gain momentum over the next couple of months and walk further and further using her walker.
Realistic goals
As she continued to increase her walking distance, Magne started walking outside more and more until eventually she was able to go all the way to the café using her walker and one seated break.
Physiotherapist John said: “It’s a pleasure working with Magne. She’s determined and will not let anything get in her way. We never thought we would get this far but together, step-by-step, we’ve been setting small and realistic goals and she’s just been smashing each one every single time.”
Magne was equally praiseworthy about her sessions, saying: “I’d be lost without John – I wouldn’t even be able to walk! The sessions have been wonderful.”
We’re all full of admiration for Magne as another senior who has smashed her targets through her own determination and with the help of The Physio Co.
