Living independently at home starts with identifying the warning signs of ageing, and any support needed, early in the process.
Do you have a Mum or Dad who is getting older? Have you seen the warning signs that often go unnoticed?
How can you tell if Mum or Dad are starting to need help to live independently at home or prevent injury?
The Physio Co strongly recommends a proactive approach to noticing and taking action on age-related changes affecting health, fitness, balance and strength. Our 20 years’ of experience has clearly shown us that the sooner you act, the more likely your Mum or Dad can stay living independently at home.
There are a number of day-to-day indicators your parent may show that can help you determine if they need some extra support to continue living independently.
To help you keep an eye on these signs, we’ve produced a handy checklist to help you identify the warning signs that your parent might need help at home.
We’ve broken this up into three simple sections of clear warning signs:
- GREEN SECTION – “maybe” (keep an eye on things)
- ORANGE SECTION – “probably” (might want to consider getting a check-in for your Mum or Dad)
- RED SECTION – “definitely” (we recommend getting some advice from a physio)

If this quiz has you thinking more about your Mum or Dad’s age, health and independence, you’re off to a great start!
If you answered YES to any of the orange or red questions in the checklist, we recommend you start taking action to support your Mum or Dad to stay mobile, safe, happy and independent.
Our physios can visit Mum or Dad at home or even offer an online physiotherapy consultation for people in remote areas.
